In 2014, Didem Mert received her BFA in ceramics from Northern Kentucky University and in 2017, her MFA in ceramics from Edinboro University of Pennsylvania. She has exhibited nationally at over 40 venues, including Companion Gallery, Charlie Cummings Gallery, and AKAR. Her work was published in “2014 Undergrad Showcase,” Ceramics Monthly, September; and featured on the cover of Pottery Making Illustrated, January/February 2016. She was included in “15 Potters to Watch in 2016”, CFile (website); and “10 Ceramic Artists Giving Pottery a Modern Update,” Architectural Digest website, July 27, 2016. Didem is currently a studio artist living in Cincinnati, Ohio.
Didem will be teaching ‘Pinched!’ at Touchstone from August 6–10, 2018. In this workshop, students will learn Didem’s techniques of using bisque molds and soft slabs for pinching as well as a handful of tricks on how to make pinched work without the typical hand strain that often occurs. Demonstrations and discussions will include the process of making terra sigillatas and their use at mid-range temperatures. You will then decorate your terra sigillatas and work with AMACO velvet underglazes to create a sense of playfulness directed through the color palette, while retaining a minimalistic design. This workshop is suitable for All Levels.
