Tenth Annual Jim Campbell Hammer-In with Rivers of Steel Iron Pour

For the Love of Iron!
Please join us at Touchstone Center for Crafts for our Tenth Annual Jim Campbell Hammer-In. Anyone interested in learning more about the art of blacksmithing is welcome to register and attend. Held in the Hart Moore Blacksmith Studio on campus, this yearly celebration of all things blacksmithing honors the enduring legacy of longtime volunteer and Touchstone friend, Jim Campbell.
In addition to a stellar line up of demonstrations at the forge, we are thrilled to be hosting an exhibition iron pour by Rivers of Steel. Historically there has always been a close relationship between forge and foundry practices. Each discipline compliments the other by providing the working necessities particular to these trades. Many tools employed by the smith originate in a stream of molten iron poured into specially prepared sand molds. Foundrymen would be at a loss without finely wrought tools provided by the smith. In cooperation with the Rivers of Steel organization, the art and practice of these two disciplines will be celebrated for the first time ever at Touchstone.
Make plans to come out to Wharton Furnace Road and enjoy the day as the sparks fly! Interested participants may choose to attend just the Iron Pour, spend the day on Saturday, or the entire weekend. Anyone interested in attending the full or partial event can register at touchstonecrafts.org/hammer-in. As a special offering, currently enrolled college and graduate students can attend at a severely reduced cost.

Meet the Presenters:
We have a terrific lineup of presentations and demonstrations in store!
Demonstrations by artists/blacksmiths include Glen Gardner, Anna Koplik, and Jared Ondovchik. We are excited about this year’s lineup, each of the artists is well known in the blacksmithing and arts community while having strong ties to Touchstone Center for Crafts. Glen currently serves on our board of directors, Anna served as a studio tech at Touchstone for two seasons, for which she credits helping to launch her career. All three blacksmiths will be offering workshops at Touchstone this season.
Glen Gardner – ‘Stakes & Hammers in the Japanese Style’
Glen will be demonstrating the making and use of Japanese style tools used for shaping sheet metals. Japanese smiths take a straightforward approach when making the tools needed to form sheet metal materials. This approach offers a high degree of adaptability and scalability, allowing the smith to quickly make the tools needed and get right on to the projects at hand. Whether planning projects in black or red metals, making simple forming stakes is not out of reach for even the beginner.
Glen Gardner is a longtime friend to Touchstone Center for Crafts and currently serves on our board of directors. Glen is a sculptor/metalsmith whose work ranges from purely sculptural to functional. He works in all metals, including bronze, silver, gold, and iron. Glen has taught workshops in a variety of settings, including craft schools and several universities across the country. This season, Glenn will be teaching ‘The Art of Welding’ at Touchstone, an in-depth weeklong workshop from August 6-10, 2018. Sign up today!
Anna Koplik – ‘Forging Scrolling Tongs’
Anna will be demonstrating how to forge a pair of scrolling tongs. These critical tools are tricky to make and so versatile for a smith! This is the perfect introduction into understanding how to make them from the initial forging through the final step of riveting them together. Anyone who has ever wondered how to make their own tongs will have a thorough understanding when they leave.
Anna Koplik graduated from Pratt Institute with a BFA in Jewelry and has taken classes on blacksmithing and bladesmithing at Peters Valley School of Craft and New England School of Metalwork. Anna has worked as the Blacksmithing Assistant at Peters Valley, as an apprentice at Atlas Forge with Ed Claypoole in Hopwood, PA, and as the Blacksmithing Technician at Touchstone Center for Crafts for two seasons. She is currently working as a blacksmith and fabricator at Spirit Ironworks, Inc. on Long Island, NY.

We are excited to have Anna back for the Jim Campbell Hammer-In and also to teach a weeklong workshop this season. Sign up today!
Jared Ondovchik – ‘The Art of Bladesmithing’
In this demonstration, Jared will be going over the basics of bladesmithing design. He will demonstrate the basic forging techniques used to create a chef’s knife. Spectators will walk away with an appreciation for the hard work and craftsmanship that goes into a hand-forged kitchen knife.
Jared Ondovchik is a self-taught blacksmith and bladesmith from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Eight years ago, Jared made his first knife and has been the owner and full-time operator of Artifact Metalworks, LLC for three years. To see some of Jared’s work, visit artifact-metalworks.com
Jared will be teaching an extended weekend workshop, ‘Bladesmithing Basics,’ at Touchstone from August 24-27, 2018. Sign up today to explore the basics of bladesmithing design!
