2-3 DAY WEEKEND WORKSHOPS: AUG 26-28 THROUGH SEP 30-OCT 1

AUG 26-28 | 3-DAY (SAT-MON)
Felted, Beaded, and Flat Tapestry Crochet
Instructor: Carol Ventura

All Levels
$470 Member | $500 Non-Member
$40-$90 Materials and Studio Fees

This workshop is no longer open for enrollment.

A large hook, two wool yarns (one beaded), and loose single crochet stitches will be used to tapestry crochet a flat bead felted bag with a star or a personal design. Then, a cylindrical beaded basket will be tapestry crocheted with a smaller hook, beaded cotton thread, and tight stitches. Each basket thread is loaded with only one bead color, eliminating the need to load beads in a specific color sequence ahead of time! The motif is formed on one side of the fabric by adding a bead to each stitch and on the other side the colored threads echo the image. The last project is flat tapestry crocheted, which, unlike traditional crochet, does not show the back of the stitches on every other row. Along the way participants will learn how to design motifs with three different tapestry crochet graph papers, use a bead spinner to thread beads onto yarn, and block projects with a steam iron.

This five-day workshop encourages participants to experiment with innovative and intuitive ways of creating a variety of structures and forms using organic, found, and recycled materials. Participants are invited to think about shapes and forms that hold particular interest and bring these ideas to the workshop. Using unusual techniques developed by Geoffrey to overcome construction challenges, each participant will complete a variety of forms, something they want to create.

Participants will be asked to bring some of their own favorite cast-off materials. This workshop is perfect for beginners seeking an introduction to creating curious objects as well as intermediate and advanced participants wishing to reach the next level and break out of their comfort zone. Participants need to be familiar with using hand and power tools such as drills, band saws, and sanders. We will look at selecting and designing pedestals and stands for artwork. We will also learn how to make patinated and painted tin to add age and color to various forms.

Weaving a Handbag Basket
Instructor: April Stone

All Levels
$665 Member | $695 Non-Member
$140-$190 Materials and Studio Fees

Working with locally harvested and hand processed Black Ash from the forests of northern Wisconsin, participants will develop a deeper understanding of what it takes to free-form weave their own Black Ash basket. Starting with cutting and scraping, participants will begin the process of laying out splint in a twill base. One-round weaving creates the sides of the basket, followed by the finishing of the sturdy rim system. Although a complete basket at this point, the final step concludes with a thoughtfully placed and wrapped splint handle. Measuring approximately 14”x4”x11” (17” at top of handle) when complete and designed to carry a load of up to 10#, each basket will be made slightly different than the next. Some hand strength is needed, and knife skills are a plus.
